Victorian Turquoise and Diamond Double Snake Ring c.1900

SKU RG190

RG190

Price

£1,500.00

A beautiful gold double snake ring with two inter-twined snake heads holding their tails.

One snake head is set with an old cut diamond and the other with a cabochon turquoise. The turquoise was used in the 19th Century as a romantic message to the wearer to 'forget me not' with diamond a symbol of enduring unending love and constancy. The ring is full of meaning with the ouroboros, a circular depiction of a snake swallowing its own tail being a symbol of eternity.

This lovely snake ring is in a warm yellow gold and low set to the finger it is fully marked for Birmingham 1900. The maker's stamp for JH (Jonathan Howe?) has been stuck 4 times in the ring. We would not recommend this ring for heavy wear as turquoise is a softer stone and more susceptible to damage.

Snake rings became popular after Queen Victoria was presented with a continuous snake ring as her engagement ring from Price Albert. Her ring, which signified everlasting love for eternity, had an emerald, her birthstone, centered in its head. This set a trend throughout England to wear a snake as a symbol of love worn by both women and men.
