An unsual Victorian garnet and enamel 'egg' locket.

This beautifully made pendant has an oval cabochon garnet set to the centre in a raised mount surrounded by a turquoise blue enamel border.

The pendant has a tapered oval glazed locket to the reverse and the gold back is engraved 'KATE SMITH 30th JUNE 1871'.

The pendant has a gold runner ring to the top for a chain or ribbon and is in fabulous conditon with no damage to the enamel.

The egg has long been associated as a symbol of fertility and protection. Eggs represented renewal or new life in Victorian jewellery so this piece would have been a beautiful memorial piece when originally made.
