A highly unusual Victorian diamond butterfly brooch
The brooch is set with a combination of old-cut diamonds to the body and white and champage old-cut diamonds set to the wings.
The brooch is silver fronted and gold backed typical of the Victorian era, with ruby eyes and a sprung pin to the reverse. There is a screw fitting hole to the back indicating the brooch might have been worn as a hairpiece at some point.
The butterfly was a popular motif in fashion and jewellery for the Victorian age. Long associated with the soul and metamorphosis butterfiles were also seen as elegant and beautiful - perfect accessories for a fashionable Victorian lady.
