Edwardian Star Sapphire & Diamond Cluster Ring c.1910
£0.00
An early 20th Century star sapphire & diamond cluster ring.
This beautiful ring has a pale lilac/grey cabochon star sapphire to the centre surrounded with a border of 10 old cut diamonds in a daisy cluster design.
The ring is low set to the hand with the cabochon sapphire sitting higher than the diamonds in a fine claw setting. The diamonds are in a rubover silver setting. The head of the ring has an openwork gallery with chenier detailing and slightly tapered shoulders onto a plain gold band.
As the ring is silver and gold set we would not recommend this for 'heavy' everday wear.
Star sapphires are caused by an optical phenomenon known as asterism. Asterism – from the Latin ‘astrum’, meaning star – is caused by small needle-like inclusions of the mineral rutile. This causes the light to reflect in a unique way, causing a star to form on the stone.
A star sapphire needs to have the right amount of rutile to allow it to be cut and polished, and they are often cut into cabochons with high domes to maximise the star effect. Star sapphires are becoming increasingly more difficult to find.
