An unusual Edwardian bug brooch.

The brooch has a central oval cabochon opal in a rubover setting between swept back Mississippi pearl wings. The 'bug' has a seed pearl set abdomenand gold legs.

This brooch is probably American in origin.

Edwardian and Victorian jewelry designs reflected the late nineteenth-century interest and romanticized notions of the natural world. Insect jewellery was popular and opals would have been a modern choice having gained in popularity since its discovery in Australia in the late 1880's.

Measurements: Brooch 2.6 cm (1") in length, 1.8cm (3/4") at widest point, 3 grams in weight
