An unusual Edwardian bug brooch.
The brooch has a central oval cabochon opal in a rubover setting between swept back Mississippi pearl wings. The 'bug' has a seed pearl set abdomenand gold legs.
This brooch is probably American in origin.
Edwardian and Victorian jewelry designs reflected the late nineteenth-century interest and romanticized notions of the natural world. Insect jewellery was popular and opals would have been a modern choice having gained in popularity since its discovery in Australia in the late 1880's.
Era: Edwardian, 1901 - 1920
Measurements: Brooch 2.6 cm (1") in length, 1.8cm (3/4") at widest point, 3 grams in weight
