A fabulous antique diamond set RAMC Sweetheart Brooch designed as a cap badge.
The cap badge brooch is designed as the rod of Asclepius with a serpent entwined round it, head uppermost and looking left, all within a laurel wreath. Asclepius is after the ancient Greek god of healing and medicine.
The wreath is surmounted by a Kings crown and has the motto IN ARDUIS FIDELIS (Faithful in Adversity) detailed on a blue banner the to the base.
The brooch is beautifully figured, the snake is diamond set with ruby eyes. The crown is set with old table cut diamonds to the band and has red enamel detailing. The banner is enamelled in blue with gold lettering.
The brooch is finely made in platinum and gold and has a sprung hinged pin to the reverse typical of the era. It is in wonderful condition.
The Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) was formed in 1898 and is responsible for maintaining the health of servicemen and women. The Corps is represented wherever British Soldiers are deployed, providing medical support to operations, exercises and training expeditions all over the world.
Sweetheart brooches have been popular since the early 20th century and were given to wives, mothers and girlfriends by servicemen as mementos and reminders of the absent loved one. They were worn to show pride in having a sweetheart who was serving his country. They were made for every budget from base metal to platinum and designs were made for every aspect of the military.
